This is the first in a series of articles describing the scheduled bus routes that serve the Dragon Café in Borough. The café is a social enterprise that welcomes customers on Mondays. During the current epidemic, the café’s operation has been temporarily suspended and some of the parks, amenities and places of worship mentioned below are also closed.

Route 21 buses operate a daily service from Lewisham in Travelcard Zone 3 through Borough to Newington Green in Zone 2. It is a relatively frequent service that operates day and night. The buses and crews, managed by Go-Ahead London Central, run over a route inaugurated on 6th April 1911, superseding the horse-drawn service numbered 40. Between the World Wars, the regular route was elongated through Sidcup to the village of Farningham in Kent, a place that stands a kilometre east of the present-day orbital motorway (designated M25). Several TfL contracted buses, such as the 122, 178, 233 and 321, now serve much of that historic route east of Lewisham Clocktower.
